How to Say 'Hello' in Italian

Many phrases can be used to say "hello" to a person in Italian. Depending on the situation, you can use one of a number of phrases to greet an individual.

Instructions

1. Say "salve" (pronounced "sal-vey") if you wish to say "hello," or "ciao" (pronounced "chow") for a simple, less formal "hi."

2. Use "buon giorno" (pronounced "bwon jorno") for "good morning," "buona sera" (pronounced bwonah sarah) for "good evening" and "buona notte" (pronounced bwonah not-tey) for "good night."

3. Ask "come sta?" (pronounced "komay stah") if you want to know how the person is doing. This is a simple "how are you?" greeting in Italian.

4. A physical greeting is also appropriate when saying "hello" in Italian. A handshake is appropriate when a man is meeting another man for the first time. If meeting a female, either a single kiss on one cheek or a kiss on both cheeks is appropriate (which you use can be determined by the person and your relationship with that person). A relative probably receives the "double kiss" regardless of gender.
