How to Make Printable Bookmarks in Microsoft Word

If you love to read books, it is more than likely that you have used many different items to hold your place: a torn piece of scrap paper, a piece of junk mail, a receipt scrounged from the depths of your purse, a dollar bill, a comb, or anything else within reach that might fit and lie flat. The next time you have to put down that novel you're nose-deep in, treat yourself to a custom-made bookmark (and make some for your book-loving friends as well).

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Word by double-clicking the Word shortcut icon on your desktop, or by clicking "Start," pointing to "Programs" or "All Programs" and then finding Word in your Programs list. Open a new, blank document.

    • 2

Click "File" on the toolbar and then click "Page Setup." Under "Orientation," click "Landscape" and then "OK,"

    • 3

Click the "Columns" button on the Standard toolbar. The "Columns" button looks like two side-by-side columns of horizontal lines or dashes. Choose from one to four columns (each column will be a bookmark). Your cursor will be placed in the first column.

    • 4

Click "Insert' on the toolbar and point to "Picture." Choose between the options presented. For example, you can use Clip Art, a picture saved on your computer, or Word Art. Find and insert the desired picture and format it to the size and shape you want it to be on your bookmark.

    • 5

Insert a text box on top of your picture if desired by clicking "Insert" and then choosing "Text Box." You can then add a phrase or quote to your bookmark. Repeat with the remaining columns, and print onto your card stock.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can laminate your bookmarks using a laminator or clear sheets of contact paper.

  • Add a quote about books or reading for a lovely touch.
