How to Package a Fishing Pole for Shipping
If you are selling a fishing pole on eBay, sending one to a friend or shipping one to a glorious sports lodge in Canada where you plan to meet up with it and reel in some big ones, you have to consider first how to get it there.
Things You'll Need
- Duct tape
- Bubble wrap or tissue paper
- Cardboard tube or PVC pipe with caps for the ends

1
Disassemble the fish rod into as many small pieces as you can.
-
2
Wrap those pieces gently in bubble wrap, foam material, newspapers, tissue or an old towel. Do not use packing peanuts. Secure this material around the pole with rubber bands, tape or ties being careful to protect the line guides on the pole and also being sure no parts of the pole will rub together.

Look for an appropriate sized tube made from PVC or French drain pipe (found at a store like Home Depot) or a cardboard artist tube, carpet tube or shipping tube. Be sure the cardboard tube is quite solid and strong. If you buy PVC pipe or French drain pipe also pick up the end caps at that time. Pick one that is 3 to 4 inches in diameter, depending on the size of your fishing pole and whatever else you want to stuff in there such as line and hooks. You can go to a sporting goods store and buy a shipping container made especially for fishing poles or stop by your UPS company, too. If a shipping store packages your pole for you it will be pricey but guaranteed against damage.

Slide the pole into the tube of your choice making sure you have it wrapped bulky enough so it fits snugly inside. Pack each end with your shipping material so the pole does not slide around or rub anywhere on the inside of the tube. Shake it to be sure it's not moving.
-
5
Secure each end with tiny screws or duct tape. Address your tube and put your return address on it. Take it to the post office or UPS and insure it for the amount you think it's worth.

Tips & Warnings
You can also carry your fishing pole in a tube on an airplane but leave one end un-taped so security can check it out.
If your pole is expensive or has sentimental value than have the professionals pack and ship it for you. The extra cost will be worth it.
