It is not uncommon for children to curse. Some children curse in an attempt to be cool. Others curse as a result of learned behavior (copying the language used by friends and family). Some children use cursing as a way to get attention. And some children curse as a form of rebellion.Usually, the teen years are when cursing begins, but it sometimes starts in early childhood. No matter the age of your child, the following tips will help teach him to stop cursing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be a good example to your child by not cursing in front of her.

  2. Step 2

Discuss with your child that you do not find cursing acceptable. Help him to find other, more appropriate words to express himself.

  3. Step 3

Set household rules against cursing. Establish punishments that will be used if the cursing rule is broken.

  4. Step 4

Do not be a pushover. If you let your child break the rules without following through with a punishment, the child will continually break the rules in the future.

  5. Step 5

Reward your child for succeeding in discontinuing the use of bad words. Rewards can be as simple as praising the child or as involved as special privileges.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not yell at children for cursing. Keep your cool when talking to or punishing your child. A rebellious teenager who is cursing needs to learn to control her behavior. Your controlled behavior and good communication skills can be a good example for your child to follow. Dish out punishments calmly and fairly. Punishments teach the child that there are consequences to her actions.
