Step 1
Check out Screaming Mimi's on Lafayette Street in Greenwich Village. This vintage shop has been around for a long time, and has a loyal customer base. The shop carries an eclectic mix of vintage items from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and even the 1980s. From sequined party dresses to bell bottoms, you can find almost anything at Screaming Mimi's. There is also a great variety of shoes, ties, sunglasses, umbrellas and jewelry. This is a fun place to hunt for vintage finds.

Step 2
Go to Andy's Chee-Pees on Broadway, also in Greenwich Village. This is a rather large vintage store with a massive selection of vintage T-shirts, pants, jackets, coats and dresses. The layout is rather cramped, so you have to do a lot of searching and keep your eyes wide open, but you are likely to find something very cool. The staff is also very helpful as well.

Step 3
Go to Zachary's Smile on Greenwich Avenue (also in Greenwich Village). This is a sophisticated and elegant vintage shop. The inventory isn't as massive as at many other vintage shops, but what is on offer is of high quality. This is a wonderful place to purchase an adorable swinging-60s mod shift dress or a Bohemian skirt.

Step 4
Shop at Resurrection Vintage Clothing on Mott Street. Little Italy might seem a rather unlikely spot for a vintage store, but don't be fooled by the location. Resurrection is a terrific vintage shop with a plethora of interesting, wacky and retro coats, dresses, jackets, coats and T-shirts. The shoes and accessories are also great. This is a great place to experience authentic vintage shopping in New York City.

Step 5
Stop by Rags A GoGo on West 14th Street in the West Village. This place has an excellent selection of vintage clothing, particularly of a Western flair, like cowboy boots and fringe. However, it also offers a good selection of other standard vintage fare from the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond. The prices are great and the owner is extremely courteous and friendly. This is a fun place to shop for vintage fashion with a Western flair.
