When a man has difficulty getting and maintaining an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse, he may have erectile dysfunction (ED). While ED cannot be diagnosed after just a few isolated incidences of erectile problems, it may be diagnosed if sustained symptoms are evident. Often, men are disheartened and embarrassed by erectile issues, but they are more common than many people think. Fortunately, there are some reliable ways of treating this condition.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See your doctor to confirm the condition. In some cases, the problem may be temporary, such as if you are under a lot of stress or taking a medication that zaps your libido. In such a situation, you may need to reduce stress or switch medications instead of working to fix ED.

  2. Step 2

Try oral medicines if your doctor confirms that you have erectile dysfunction. Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil) are among the most common drugs for treating ED. Available by prescription only, these phosphodiesterase inhibitors make it possible for you to get an erection in response to stimulation.

  3. Step 3

Undergo needle-injection therapy using alprostadil (prostaglandin E). This synthetic hormone is injected into the base of the penis and produces an erection in as little as five minutes. You can expect your erection to last for about one hour with this treatment.

  4. Step 4

Use Muse (self-administered intraurethral therapy) to fix erectile dysfunction. With this treatment, you use a disposable applicator to place alprostadil into your penis at the tip. The alprostadil is in the form of a suppository that is smaller than a grain of rice.

  5. Step 5

Try testosterone replacement therapy to fix erectile dysfunction. You should know, however, that only a small number of men are affected by low testosterone levels, so this may not work for you.

  6. Step 6

Use a penis pump, which is a hollow tube that is placed over the penis, to suck air out and draw blood into the penis, producing an erection. A tension ring is then used to maintain the erection long enough for you to have sexual intercourse.

  7. Step 7

Opt for surgery if other methods have failed. Vascular surgery unblocks blood flow to the penis, allowing natural erections to occur again. Penile implants, on the other hand, involve the insertion of an inflatable device or rods to create an erection.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you think your erectile dysfunction is caused by stress or anxiety, consider seeing a therapist. You might even benefit from sex therapy with your partner.
