How to Acquire Valygar in Baldur's Gate 2
There are many characters in the PC role-playing game Baldur's Gate 2 who initially appear to be enemies but can actually become allies. Valygar is one such character whom the party is hired to hunt down and kill for a string of murders. Valygar is a member of the "Stalker" class, which combines the abilities of a ranger and a wizard, and can be a very helpful member of the party if you choose to acquire him.

Fight your way out of the game's opening dungeon and make your way into the city of Athkatla.

Go to the Government District in Athkatla and locate the large building with the dome on top, where the "Council of Six" resides.

Speak with the person standing outside named Madeen, who will tell the party about a wizard inside the Council of Six building who is looking for adventurers to undertake a quest.

Head into the Council of Six building and speak with the wizard named Tolgerias. Accept Tolgerias' quest to hunt down the man named Valygar who is accused of murdering members of the Cowled Wizard order.

Leave the Council of Six building and go to Valygar's house, which is also in the Government District. Valygar's manservant will inform the party that Valygar has gone to the Umar Hills.

Travel to the city gates and leave Athkatla, which will bring up the overland map of the area. Click on the area marked as the "Umar Hills."

Talk to Valygar in his cabin in the Umar Hills. He will claim that the members of the Cowled Wizard order whom he killed had both attacked him first. Choose the dialog option to believe his story and ask him to join the group. Valygar will then become a playable character.

Tips & Warnings
The Cowled Wizards are after Valygar because he is able to open a gateway to the Planar Sphere in the Slums District of Athkatla. If you travel there after acquiring Valygar, you can enter the Planar Sphere and complete several quests inside.
If you choose the dialog option to attack Valygar instead of believing his story, you will not be able to gain him as a playable character later in the game.
