Tar is an oil base product, you can fight fire with fire. Lighter fluid will brake down the tar and is not as harsh as other chemicals.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Lighter fluid

Obtain the items that you will need. Inspect the surrounding area, example wood floors etc. You want to protect anything around the area that you are working on so that the lighter fluid won't destroy. Put down some plastic if needed.

  2. Step 2

Put on your rubber gloves. Lightly wet your rag with lighter fluid, rub gently and observe that it is being removed. Continue to do this changing rags as needed.

  3. Step 3

Mix some liquid soap and water, dip a clean rag and wash off the lighter fluid.

  4. Step 4
    Bug and tar remover

Another product you can try is found at your local automotive section or parts store. Bug and tar remover. Some of these products work, I try to stay with name brands. Lots of these products are weak.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear rubber gloves to prevent skin irritation
  • DO NOT use lighter fluid around an open flame or any hot surface
  • DO NOT smoke while performing this task
  • Watch for electrical devices (use caution)
  • Always wear eye protection when working with man made products.

on 9/16/2008 Good article. I might try this cleaning fluid out on my van.

on 8/16/2008 Good tips. I lived in a house where the next door house burned down and the tar on our roof melted and ran down the side of the house. This tip wouldn't have worked there (it covered half the side of a 2-story home), but it does work on smaller areas.
