Make Recycled Crafts: Styrofoam Egg Carton Christmas Tree Ornament

Unfortunately Styrofoam is not accepted at recycling centers. Recycle your Styrofoam egg cartons into these cute Christmas Tree Ornaments.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Styrofoam egg carton, washed and dried
  • Scissors
  • Christmas Tree cookie cutter of template
  • Green acrylic paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Needle and thread for hanger
  1. Step 1

Cut the top portion of the egg carton from the bottom. Reserve the bottom for a paint palette or for other recycled crafts such as the memory game in resources below.

  2. Step 2

Trace you template into the two flat portions of the egg carton top as shown in the picture. Cut out your Christmas trees.

  3. Step 3

Paint your Christmas Trees with green acrylic paint (both sides and edges). Let dry. Rinse paint from your paint brush and let dry.

  4. Step 4

Cut half way up from the bottom center of one Christmas Tree, and half way down the top center of the second tree as shown in the picture.

  5. Step 5

Slide the trees together through the cut slots.

  6. Step 6

With your needle and thread, poke a hole through the top of the tree and knot your thread for a hanger.

  7. Step 7

You can also cut a Styrofoam star for you tree using the yellow flat portions of a yellow egg carton. Glue to the top of your tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave the hanger off and sit the tree on flat surfaces for a Christmas Decoration.
  • Glue colorful gems, sequins, or small beads onto the tree for ornaments.
  • Use caution with sharp scissors.

on 9/13/2009 I was going to try this, but the egg carton I got had two big humps in the top, not enough room for any kind of tree.

on 12/21/2008 Oh this one is fun! The basic pattern is good for many kinds of free standing toys and ornaments. I think I'll make some of these for my grandkids.
