Things You'll Need:
- Bird
- Tape recorder if desired
- Relaxing setting
- Accessible cage (not one up high or in a high traffic area)
-
Step 1
Once your bird is 4 months old or older, that would be a good time to start. First cuddle the bird and let them get to know you. Be very gentle at all times and speak to them in a calming voice. Do this for a few days or up to a few weeks just so they trust you and listen. Once they get to know you, then they will feel comfortable with you trying to teach them to talk.
-
Step 2
Most birds in my past experience need to hear the same word or words at least 1000 times, so be patient and just repeat the same words everyday.
Start with a simple word or words, like Good Morning, Hello, If you say Good Morning Polly or whatever the birds name is the bird will say exactly that Good Morning Polly, so perhaps start with just Good Morning or with your name. This can be done by simply uncovering their cage in the morning before you go to work. -
Step 3
You can also hold the bird on your finger and repeat the words for 15 mins to 30 mins everyday and they will learn faster. Once the bird has mastered the first 2 words or word, then you can teach them another set of words.
This is how I have taught birds to talk, I would hold them in front of me and say the same words over and over to them, they will sit and listen to you the whole time, 15 to 30 mins a day is fine or they will get bored. You can also record the phrase and leave a tape recorder on while you are at work it will turn it self off once it is finished.
You also can teach a bird to talk exactly like you, if you speak to them in a funny voice they will repeat it exactly as you sound.
They also imitate other sounds, one bird I had, could ring like my telephone, he also made clicking sounds like my pedestal clock and the tones when it would hit each hour.
Very funny to hear a bird imitate a phone and clock.
I have taught birds to sing oh my darling, phrases like lets go fishing, pretty girl, give me a kiss, what's up doc, The Beatles Paul, John, Ringo, George, Good Morning, Goodbye, Hello, what time is it, stand back what? you don't say, stop that, who are you?, Chicago Bears, I'm a Michigander, let's dance, in voices like Elmer Fudd, squeaky voices, parrot type voice and funny voices. You can teach them just about any phrase as long as it is not too long probably not too much longer than 6 words. Also the way you say your words, the bird will repeat it exactly that way, like if you teach them to ask a question they will go up at the end of the phrase.
*The most important factor to remember is to be very patient, it may seem exhausting and a waste of time but the bird will talk some take longer than others.
Also to have fun with the bird, be careful not to hold them to close to your mouth, some birds will bite your lip because of curiosity and boredom.
