Yarn wigs are fantastic for Halloween costumes. Even some children's television characters wear a yarn wig. Making a yarn wig is easy and quick.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wrap the basketball or foam wig head in plastic wrap, so that your wig doesn't get glued to it. Place the shower cap over the top of the plastic wrap; this will be the base of your wig.

  2. Step 2

Cut your yarn into pieces that are the length you want your wig to be. Begin at the bottom of the shower cap and stick the pieces of yarn to the shower cap.

  3. Step 3

Continue gluing pieces of yarn to the shower cap, working all the way upward until you get to the top of the head.

  4. Step 4

Try on the yarn wig as you go to ensure that it's looking the way you want it to look.

  5. Step 5

For the top, cut pieces that are the length you want and lay them over the top so that they go over the head, from one side to the other. This will keep your wig from showing any shower-cap "scalp" through.

  6. Step 6

Plan ahead and experiment with gluing the pieces into different styles like braids.

  7. Step 7

Remove the shower cap from the ball carefully and try it on your head. Make any yarn or glue adjustments before Halloween. You can use the hot glue to tighten up the shower cap up and make it fit better, if necessary.

  8. Step 8

To wear, tuck all of your hair into a headband and a ponytail (if it's long enough) and place the shower cap on your head. You can use large bobby pins to secure it to your head. A hat can also be added to your wig and secured with bobby pins.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use yarn in two colors, like red and orange, for dimension.
  • Do not wash your yarn wig in the washing machine. If you do, don't dry it in the dryer. Chances are it will get all tied in knots and the glue will stop sticking to the shower cap, melt all over your dryer and cause problems.
