Things You'll Need:
- Imagination
- Positive Attitude
- Lots of Personality
-
Step 1
The secret to a great book signing is in the preparation. This motto sums it up 'give the customers want they want.'
Think about it. What attracts you to purchase a product? Is it the packaging or the gifts associated with it or the clever advertisement that brings you to the store? Chances are it is a combination of all these things. You must grab the attention of bookstore shoppers or they will not come into your book signing space. Here are some easy and cost effective ways to do that. -
Step 2
1. Decorate your table so it is eye catching. If the theme of your book is animals in the wild, then use animal prints and create a jungle scene. If the book is about cooking, create a kitchen-like atmosphere. When I go to book signings for my novel, The Rich American Woman, I decorate the table in colors related to India's rich culture since my main character works in the mission fields of India.
2. Music is always a nice touch. For The Rich American Woman, I play songs from the schoolchildren of India sent to me by my sponsored child. You may not be able to get authentic music straight from the place itself, but you will be able to find music in your local music store for your needs.
3. Advertise a giveaway with your book. For my novel, I created Jasmine sachets with the name of my website business and book title printed on gold labels attached to each sachet. The jasmine flower is very symbolic in the Indian culture.
4. If you offer services such as free critiques, cooking lessons, gardening help etc. make sure you have brochures on hand to give to customers. Also, give them to those who do not purchase a book. You never know when they will become a customer.
Lastly, make sure you engage in pleasant conversation with people who stop by your table. I have gotten more feedback and positive responses from striking up a conversation with someone, than if I had waited for them to initiate the conversation. -
Step 3
One word of warning: Be friendly not obnoxious. Also, always have enough books on hand. Some storeowners like to take books on consignment. For large chain stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble, you will need to contact the main headquarters and fill out a form to request a book signing. However, small independent and local Christian bookstores owners are willing to allow a book signing. If you are successful with your first signing, you can be sure you will be asked back for another.

on 11/15/2009 It really does make a difference. People are attracted by what they see on the table, that's when you can enter into discussion about your book
