Instructions

    • 1

Trim at least a couple inches off your hair to get rid of split ends and overprocessed hair. For hair that's been severely damaged or for drastic changes, consider a much shorter cut to get rid of as much of the dyed hair as possible.

    • 2

Highlight your hair using double-color highlights to match the old and new colors. A natural brunette growing out blond hair should add blond highlights to break up the dark roots. Add a second highlight in the natural brown color to break up the blond ends and mesh with the darker roots. As the hair grows out, add less and less blond highlights until the natural color prevails.

    • 3

Dye your hair back to the original color after letting your hair grow out at least an inch so your natural color can be matched to the corresponding dye.

    • 4

Work gradually from dark to light if you dyed your hair a very deep color and want to get back to light brown or blond. Use highlighting or solid dye to go from black to dark brown. Then lighten to medium brown and move to lighter shades until you reach your original color.

Use semi-permanent dyes during the transition; they gradually fade out with washing, lessening the time you have to grow out the artificial coloring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit a professional for drastic changes. Ask for an appointment with a colorist who's had extensive training in working with color and solving hair-color problems.

  • Take good care of your hair as you transition. Ease up on the heated styling tools and use a quality conditioner to keep your hair from drying out and getting brittle.

  • Always read the manufacturer's directions and warnings when handling hair dye.
