Being an entertainment promoter can be a successful career with a moderately high income--if done correctly. In order to establish yourself as a promoter, you need to research, network and plan. Research your local promoters. Ask around and see how they got started in the promoting business. Go to local and non-local clubs to get a taste of what kind of place you want to promote. In other words, find your "niche." Promote something or some place where you would actually want to go, and devote your time in learning as much as you can about the potential market and place where you wish to promote.

Take classes in public relations and finance. In order to be successful, you need to know what you are talking about and learn how to budget yourself properly. If you have some public relations experience, then apply to some firms to learn what it takes to promote and to be successful with it. Ask your co-workers and even your boss how they started with their career.

Volunteer at your local craft shows, festivals, concerts or any event that is taking place in your city. This is a great way to learn the basics of promoting, and a great chance for you to meet people that have been in the business for many years. This may be a great opportunity to get some experience and even find your potential clientele.

Network. In order to be successful as a promoter, you need to know people and be able to have connections at places and with people. Networking is the only way you are going to meet people and get your name and face out in the industry. Start a website or promote yourself and your abilities on such networking sites as MySpace or Facebook, but make it professional. Don't show anything but your last entertainment events, skills and experience (see Resources below).

Start off small with your first few parties. Don't waste your money on promoting a huge place when you haven't fully established yourself yet. Start with 50 to100 people for your first party. In a smaller group you are able to meet people and engage in more intimate conversation, as opposed to a huge party with thousands of people and little chance to introduce yourself. This way you can make connections and your face will become recognizable.
