You might believe your home is safe without a security system, and while it may be for now, it only takes one burglary or break-in to destroy that safe feeling. Some burglaries take place when you are out of town but this doesn't make it any better or safer than if you were home. These simple steps will help you pick a home security system so you can create a safe and secure haven for your family.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Phone
  • Phone book
  • Computer with Internet access (for researching purposes)
  1. Step 1

Decide if hardwired or wireless is right for you. Most people today use wireless home security systems for many different reasons. One of those reasons is that wireless systems use lithium batteries, where hardwired systems use electricity. Another reason people choose wireless is because it is easy to install. Hardwired systems will have to be wired throughout your home and can take longer to install.

  2. Step 2

Choose your budget. If you don't have unlimited funds to purchase a home security system you should first set a budget. Knowing what you can afford will help make picking a home security system that much easier.

  3. Step 3

Count the entry ways in your home. Entry ways are every window and door that can be accessed from outside. This will help when you begin researching the many different home security systems.

  4. Step 4

Contact local companies. Sure, you can look through your phone book, but if you have more than just a few companies to choose from, you might look to a different source. Call different security companies, and get quotes from each place.

  5. Step 5

Choose the extra features you want. You will have to pay extra for features like a fire alarm, depending on the security company you choose. Many companies will either offer free installation with their security systems, and some may charge a small fee. You can find this out when you call the companies.

  6. Step 6

Ask any questions you have. Some home security systems will require you to sign a contract, so before putting your signature on any paper of any kind, make sure you understand just what it is you are signing.
