How to Crochet a Cloche Hat

Cloche is French for "bell," and it is often used to describe a particular style of bell-shaped hat that was worn by flappers in the 1920s. Today, many people are still interested in the styles of the Roaring Twenties, particularly those of flappers. Cloche hats are making a comeback, and handmade hats such as those made of wool and other fibers are especially in vogue.

Instructions

1. Choose a cloche pattern. There are many different resources on the Internet that offer free crochet patterns, and there are also sites that offer downloadable patterns for a fee (see Resources below). If you have access to a bookstore or library, you can also find patterns for cloche hats in many craft books.

2. Purchase supplies required. Most crocheters will have the size hooks that they need already (if not, crochet hooks are an inexpensive investment), so all that is needed is the yarn. Try to purchase a higher-quality yarn for your hat, such as wool, instead of acrylic yarns.

3. Read over your pattern. Familiarize yourself with the abbreviations for crocheting; most patterns will include a key at the top that lets you know that, for example, sc = single crochet, but if you need to learn your abbreviations, there are many different resources to help you online. Additionally, make sure you are looking at an American crochet pattern versus an English one; the abbreviations and stitches are different between the two types.

4. Start crocheting. Most cloches are made in the round and may require markers at the beginning of each round so that you don't get lost. Follow your pattern carefully, and don't forget to count your stitches.

5. Block your cloche hat. Blocking usually means hand-washing the article you've just crocheted in some cool water and soap for delicates. Set your hat out to air-dry, and while it is drying, carefully tug your hat into the shape you want; this will allow the cloche to look finished.

Tips & Warnings

• Remember, if your cloche hat doesn't come out right the first time, you can always unravel your product and start over again, so don't get discouraged.

• Don't try to substitute different size crochet hooks for the hook indicated. This will create a problem in the size of your finished product.
