How to Eat to Be Happy

Feeling sad is no laughing matter, especially if your sadness is a form of depression. Being happy is much more fun, but unfortunately quite a few people suffer from deep feelings of sadness and would do almost anything to feel better. Certain medications help, but nature offers remedies without side effects. Since some foods assist with the production of serotonin and since serotonin has been found to promote feelings of happiness, foods of this type may be worth incorporating into your diet when you want to elevate your mood. Selenium and Omega-3 fatty acids found in some of the foods mentioned below can also make you feel happier. Here’s how to eat to be happy.

Instructions

    • 1

Eat Brazil nuts. Brazil nuts contain a very high amount of serotonin. As it goes, though, too much of anything can be bad for you, and too much serotonin can be toxic. For this reason, only a few Brazil nuts should be consumed at one time and only once in a while when you want to lift your spirits.

Munch on walnuts. Walnuts contain serotonin too. They also contain Omega-3 fatty acids that are reported to help in the prevention of depression. Walnuts are also a rich source of protein and contain the B vitamins, zinc, phosphorous, magnesium, iron and calcium.

    • 3

Have a tomato salad. Tomatoes are another food that contains serotonin. Tomatoes are also high in vitamin C. Eating a tomato salad topped with your favorite salad dressing could put you in a better mood in no time.

    • 4

Toss a Caesar salad. Sometimes when someone feels blue they are lacking folic acid. This B vitamin is found in romaine lettuce, so if you want to put a smile on your face, make yourself a Caesar salad, or a regular salad with romaine lettuce in it.

    • 5

Enjoy spinach. Eat spinach for its antioxidant powers. Antioxidants help prevent free radical damage that can lead to feelings of sadness and depression.

    • 6

Take in some tuna. Eat tuna. Tuna is another food that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not consume large amounts of a combination of these foods in one day.
