Creating a Reality Show Concept

This article will share a brief instruction on how to conceive and create a concept for a reality-based tv program that you can pitch to television producers.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Interest in the Human Condition
  • A love of Games
  • Computer for Writing
  • Discipline for Writing
  1. Step 1

Observe and Identify: Use your observations, interests, passions, and life experience to discover a subject that may hold entertainment value. This may be a compelling true life story, a unique profession, or a common life or social experience that has yet to be explored in current tv programming.

  2. Step 2

Create a Format: Study the format of other current reality-based programs to learn how certain shows are structured, and create the format that would best serve your show idea.

  3. Step 3

Create a Title: In television, the Title tells it all. Word-play is often used to create fun titles that are both compelling and clever. The title of your reality show should tell what the show is, and inspire the producer's and audience's imagination. It should make people want to tune in, or in the case of a producer being pitched, it should make them want to read your project synopsis. "Fear Factor", "Survivor", "Blind Date" and "American Idol" are all great examples of titles that are both simple and exciting.

  4. Step 4

Create the Short Pitch: A "Logline" is a short, one or two sentence description that tells exactly what the show is about, and usually includes the unique hook or angle of the show.

  5. Step 5

Illustrate with Details: Now that you've got your title and logline created, its time to get into the hard details of your show. Write a synopsis that is approximately 3 to 5 pages long, describing in detail all of the aspects of your show, and the progression of what we are watching. The key is to write what we are watching. Too many beginners spend too much time explaining "why" their show idea is relevant or how it works, when a producer needs to read an outline of exactly what the audience would be watching. Plan on many rewrites, and work on refining long exposition into short points for impact.
