Not all mascaras are created equal. Some only slightly enhance while others curl, thicken, darken, lengthen or even change the color of your lashes while fulfilling other promises. You can try them all but ultimately, some will suit you better than most based on what you're looking for. Which mascara will your lashes love most?

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider how dramatic you want your look to be. If you are going for bold eye makeup, use black mascara even if you have light-colored hair. If you want a more natural look, select one that is closer to your hair color, like brown, dark brown or black-brown. There are even clear mascaras to give lashes polish without the color. For this option, it is especially important to use an eyelash curler first before combing lashes with clear mascara. You want to boost the absence of color with lashes that are curled or else you defeat the purpose of even attempting to enhance them in the first place.

  2. Step 2

Select a consistency that lengthens and thickens if you have short sparse lashes or just want a great deal more definition. There are mascaras packaged with fibers to boost length and thickness, as well as brands that come with a special brush to give special attention to each lash.

  3. Step 3

Add colored formulas to your collection if you are into trends and like creating playful looks. You can use these on the tips of lashes already coated with your neutral color, like black or brown, for a subtle effect or use them on their own for a more dramatic look.

  4. Step 4

Keep practicality and wearability part of the equation. What is the occasion? If you know you will be crying, such as at a wedding or at a tearjerker movie date, you know you should use waterproof mascara.

  5. Step 5

Familiarize yourself with reputable brands to help with your search. There are mascaras that have been around for years that have stuck around precisely because they deliver. There are always developments as well that improve upon yesterday's best with the passing of each season and year. Originally, mascara was painted onto eyelashes from a dry cake that you had to wet to activate.
