If the price of gas has you down, you may be considering buying a newer, more fuel-efficient car to help you save as much money at the pump as possible. While you could trade you old car in on a new one, you may want to try to sell it on your own first. In order to sell a car fast, you’ll need to price it right, market it well and think like a buyer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clear title to the car
  • Internet access
  • Digital camera
  • White paper
  • Printer
  1. Step 1

Find the Blue Book value of the car and price it accordingly. To sell a car fast, you’ll need to price it at or under the car’s fair market value for your area. See the link the Resources below to find the car’s Blue Book value to price it right.

  2. Step 2

List the car for sale on free classified websites. Many car buyers begin their search for a new or used car online. Search for classified websites that cater to your area and list the car on as many of them as possible. Be sure to include the year, make and model of the car and a few photographs to attract buyers.

  3. Step 3

Place a “For Sale” sign on your car and drive it around town. If others see you driving, you’re sending the message that the car is in good working condition. Be sure to include your phone number and the car’s sale price to encourage inquiries from buyers.

  4. Step 4

Make flyers to advertise your car and place them in local grocery and convenience stores. A colorful flyer that includes a photograph of the car, the year, make, model, a contact phone number and the car’s sale price will attract the attention of buyers.

  5. Step 5

Be available to show the car and allow others to test drive it in the evenings and on weekends to sell a car fast. Buyers will want to see the car after work or school, and on their days off when it’s convenient for them. If you’re unavailable during these times, it could delay the sale. Make sure there is always someone available to answer questions from buyers and show the car when you’re not going to be home.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have a clear title to sell your car before you list it for sale.
  • List your car for sale in automobile classified magazines.
  • Have the car’s title, spare keys, and service records available for when you find the right buyer.
  • Make sure your car is clean inside and out to make it more appealing to buyers.
