How to Be Comfortable in Heels

Heels have been associated with the words uncomfortable and painful, but they definitely don’t have to be! If you choose the right heels and the correct ones that work for you, you can walk around in heels all day and feel as though you’re walking around in sneakers. When choosing a pair of heels, here are some tips that you should keep in mind.

Instructions

Think about the height of the heel before you buy. If you’re not used to wearing heels or even if it’s your first pair, then picking out a pair of 4-inch heels is going to make you feel nothing but pain. A good-sized heel for a woman that wants a little height is 2 to 3 inches. It gives you the extra height that you crave with a small enough heel that you can walk without limping in pain.

Choose a wide heel instead of a stick-thin one. A wider heel is great for those that have trouble walking on heels because it gives you more balance and is more comfortable than if you were walking on stilettos. As you get used to walking on a thicker heel, you can eventually work your way down to a pair of stilettos if you so choose.

Be wary of squishy toes, also known as toes that are stuffed into front pointed heeled shoes. This is definitely going to create pain on the bottom of your feet as well as create irritation on your toes. If you are going to buy a pair of front pointed heels, make sure that your toes end right where the shoe begins to point. There is still a wide enough space for your toes to be flat and not on top of each other. You can test this by pressing on the top of the shoe to see where your toes end.

Make sure you get the right size. One way to make sure you get the right size is to never try heels on with socks. Since you never wear heels with socks, trying the shoes on while wearing them is only going to make you get a larger size. Instead, opt for trying on heels while wearing a stocking sock. Most shoe stores offer pairs to use while trying on the shoes, however, you could always bring your own. When you get the wrong size, it means that you’re going to have to work to keep the shoes on your feet, which will cause you to walk incorrectly. The better the shoes fit on your feet, the more comfortable they will be.

Wear gel cushion insoles. These are definitely a lifesaver for your feet. It creates a much more comfortable surface for you to walk on than the regular bottom of the shoe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you get your feet measured by a professional in a shoe store if you never have before or even if you haven’t done it in awhile. You want to make sure that you are going for the right-size shoes, especially when it comes to wearing heels.

  • Buy your heels a few hours after waking up. Your feet swell a small amount after you walk around a while. Buying your heels after you’ve walked around for a bit will give your feet a chance to get to their widest point.

  • Never walk out of the store without walking around in the pair of heels for a few minutes first. You want to test not only how you can walk in them but how they feel on your feet on the inside as well as by your back heel and on the top.
