Things You'll Need:

  • Good timing
  1. Step 1

Did you know that you can spend less money shopping at department and speciality stores than you can at discount stores? It's true! You can save hundreds every season by shopping at the right time. Every retailer has clearance racks at specific times of the year, the key is to be there when the mark downs are happening, and to plan to shop for the next year. There are two times a year to get the best deals. The week following the Christmas holiday is when the winter clearance begins. This goes on all the way to early February but with every week that passes there will be less selection. Summer clearance begins the week of the Independence Day holiday and follows through to September.

  2. Step 2

If you have children it pays to shop one year in advance. Of course the risk here is that you will have to estimate what size your child will be a year from now which isn't always easy. Take the time to look up some sizing charts on the internet. You can find ones that give you estimated sized based on their age, height, and weight.

  3. Step 3

If next year the item doesn't fit all is not lost! If you have niece's and nephews these items could make future presents for them. You can also re-sell these items on ebay, at yard sales, or at flea markets. You may even make more money on it than you paid! People love finding clothes that still have the tags attached at yard sales and will snach them up!

Tips & Warnings
  • Look in the newspaper for additional coupons for department stores. At the end of each season a lot of them will have a coupon for an additional 20% off clearance items because they are trying to make room for new inventory.
  • Don't be afraid to ask a salesperson if they know what day their speciality store does their mark-downs. For instance, Old Navy does their mark downs on Thursdays so that evening is a great time to search their clearance racks.
  • Read teaser signs carefully. "75% off the lowest ticketed price" is not the same as "save 75% when you take an additional 25% off the lowest ticketed price" When in doubt use a self scanner or bring a calculator.
