Prep Your Classroom for the First Day of School

Prepping your classroom for the first day of school can take up to several days, especially if you have had to switch classrooms. Follow these tips to make it a bit easier.

Instructions

Don't permanently label anything in the classroom. While it is very nice for the kids to see their names up in the classroom on the first day of school, changes usually occur in the first few days you don't want to have permanent labels on the cubbies or walls.

Don't dust off your computers and keyboards. The reason that you are not dusting them is because you covered them before you left...right? If not, I'll bet you will cover them up next summer.

    • 3

Don't pull the weeds out of the class garden; save that for the kids to do when it's time to plant the garden.

      Rat droppings look like this

Check under the desks for rat droppings; it's a disgusting thought, but probably a good idea to check.

Have something for the kids to take home with them on the first day. I go to the 99 Cent Store and buy 20 identical items and send one home with each child. I usually give the kids something school-related like a pencil sharpener or a set of markers.

Look around the room for jobs that the kids can do at the end of each day and devise a system for the kids to do a daily cleaning of the classroom.
