Make a Mint Julep: Cocktail Recipe

If you are from Kentucky or have ever been into horse racing, then you have heard of a Mint Julep cocktail. The Mint Julep has been the drink of the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. There are many different opinions on how to make the perfect mint julep. It requires the perfect balance of mint, syrup, and of course, bourbon. The taste of a Mint Julep is not all that matters. It also requires a special presentation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 1/2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
  • 4 Fresh mint sprigs
  • Simple syrup (can be made by boiling equal parts sugar and water for 5 minutes)
  • Shaved or crushed ice
  • Collins glass or silver julep cups
  1. Step 1

Muddle mint leaves and syrup in a glass.

  2. Step 2

Fill glass with shaved or crushed ice.

  3. Step 3

Add 2 1/2 oz. of Kentucky Bourbon.

  4. Step 4

Top with more ice, and garnish with a mint sprig.

  5. Step 5

    Add a straw, and enjoy.

on 11/2/2009 For a Cuban twist try the following recipe:
MOJITO MINT JULEP
• 1.5 oz. PURISTA Mojito
• 1.5 oz. premium bourbon whiskey
• 1.5 oz. club soda
• Mint leaves
Method: Combine PURISTA and bourbon whiskey into a mixing glass; add a couple of mint leaves, add ice and shake and stack on rocks. Finish the remainder of the glass with club soda and garnish with mint sprig.
