There are alot of different charitable organizations out there, that we would be willing to donate to. But how can we be sure that our hard earned money is going to the right source? Well, here are a few guidelines that will help you, to feel less apprehensive.

  1. Step 1

    Before you decide to open up your heart and give a donation, request the name and address of the organization. Go on the internet and do a search.

  2. Step 2

    Don't release your credit card or banking information, over the phone, until you have enough proof, that such organization exists.

  3. Step 3

    Avoid opening emails or attachments, unless you know that it is from a trusted source.

    If you do decide to make a donation, use a check instead of cash, and request a receipt, with the company information on it.

  5. Step 5

    Ask upfront if your donation is tax deductible, if so, request a copy of the receipt.

    Be aware of copy-cats, there are scam artists out there that will try to convince you, that they are from a certain organization, when they are not. Get in touch with the organization and investigate further.

  7. Step 7

    Share this information with, elderly friends or family members, so that they can be aware and be prepared.

  • To verify that this is a legitimate charitable organization. Search for the company at, www.give.org
  • Keep all records of donations that you made, along with the organization information.
  • Be on the look out for, scammists, especially when there is a natural disaster, such as a hurricane. Also, they target people at the end of the year, around the holidays.
  • Beware of organization that will only accept cash.
  • Never give out your social security number, even if they tell you that it's for tax purposes.
