Whether you are renting a vehicle or borrowing a friend's car, use these tips to make sure you treat it right (and save money by avoiding extra charges from a rental company).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Auto Insurance Coverage
  1. Step 1

When borrowing a car, let the owner know exactly how you plan to use it. Will you be driving long distances? Hauling loads? Off roading? Make sure it's OK with the owner, and that it's the appropriate vehicle for your purpose.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you have sufficient auto insurance coverage for driving another vehicle. If you have an accident, YOUR insurance should cover it completely.

  3. Step 3

If you're installing a car seat, place a towel under it to protect the upholstery.

  4. Step 4

Don't eat, smoke, or drink anything but water in the car. Even if you find half a french fry or a coffee stain, it doesn't give you permission to treat someone else's property with any less respect.

  5. Step 5

Do your best to keep it clean. Keep a small bag to put trash in, and do your best not to get any sand, dirt or mud in the car. Use a towel to protect the seats from a wet swimsuit, or change into something dry before getting in.

  6. Step 6

Have the car detailed before you return it. 100% hand wash is best because it's more thorough, it usually includes cleaning the interior, and it often avoids the harsh chemicals used by touchless car washes.

  7. Step 7

Fill the gas tank before you return it. Your friend shouldn't have to make an extra trip to get gas because you were too rushed or lazy. It's a matter of courtesy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sending a thank-you note will help make sure you're welcome to borrow it again next time.
  • Even if you're only borrowing a car for an hour, treating it with respect will make sure your friend knows that they can trust you with their property.
