Things You'll Need:
- Paper shredder
- software for computer
-
Step 1
Shred everything you are discarding. Shred bills and anything that has your name, address, or other information. Before discarding magazines, rip off the back cover and shred the address. Think twice before you donate reading material. Black out or cut out your address and name.
-
Step 2
Take care of your social security number. Memorize it, and don't carry a copy of it in your pocketbook or wallet. Don't give it out unless necessary.
-
Step 3
Be careful of any solicitation that seems suspicious. Don't give private information over the phone, mail, or internet unless you know the people or business.
-
Step 4
Any questionable emails need to be discarded. Do not click them. Use firewalls, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software on your computer.
-
Step 5
When choosing passwords, never use parts of your social security number, birthdays, mother's maiden name, or any personal information.
-
Step 6
Keep all your personal papers in a fireproof box in a safe place.
-
Step 7
It's unfortunate that we have to take such precautions, but we live in the informational age, which is good, but dangerous if we're not careful. Protect yourself against identity theft by safeguarding your personal information.

on 8/11/2008 Good tips! I also have identity theft insurance. If your identity gets stolen, it takes the equivilent of 40 hours a week for 4 months to clean up the mess! I'd rather have it caught early and and guaranteed clean-up by a pro!
