How to Get your State Identification Card

Keep your identification card in your wallet.

State identification cards are useful for people who don't have a driver's license either due to age or personal preference. An ID card of some type may be necessary in your state if you are over 18. Additionally, adults without ID cards may be limited in certain ways, such as facing difficulties registering to vote or boarding an airplane.

Instructions

1. Collect proof of your identity, including birth certificate, passport, former identification card, Social Security card or any other document required by your particular state.

2. Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles just like you are applying for a driver's license.

3. Look for a form for an identification card application. The form may be merged with a driver's license application. Ask a DMV employee for assistance if you cannot locate the correct form.

4. Fill out the form completely and return it. Your photo will be taken for the card and you will be required to pay a fee according to the laws of your state.
