A different and delicious variation of plain apple pie.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic Pastry for a two-crust 9 inch pie
  • 6 large firm tart cooking apples (about 1 1/2 pounds)
  • 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange rind
  • 1/2 cup plumped raisins (simmer in boiling water for 5 minutes - drain and cool)
  • 1/2 cup very coarsly chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  1. Step 1

Plump the raisins and set aside. Heat oven to 425 degrees. Peel and slice thickly the apples. To them add the raisins and walnuts. Mix together, in a large bowl, the brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour. Add the lemon and orange peel, and stir briefly.

  2. Step 2

Add the apple mixture to the flour mixture and toss to coat well. Line your pie pan with pie crust. Layer in the apple mixture and dot with butter.

  3. Step 3

Cover with the top crust. Crimp the edges securely and slit top crust at centre to allow steam to escape. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, then lower heat to 350 degrees, and bake 30 to 40 minutes longer until apples are tender and crust is browned. Serve slightly warm. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
