Although this bar contains nutritious ingredients, it is a very sweet treat that everyone will enjoy!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups quick oats
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 14 oz bag of caramels
  1. Step 1

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 8 by 13 inch baking pan. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and quick oats. Melt the butter and add it to the dry mixture, stirring to combine until it resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside one cup of this mixture for the topping.

  2. Step 2

Press the remaining mixture firmly into the buttered pan and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Spread the chopped walnuts and chocolate chips on the cooled base. Over low heat, in a heavy saucepan, combine the warm water and caramels. Stir slowly until mixture is smooth.

  3. Step 3

Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the nuts and chips. On top of this sprinkle randomly the reserved cup of crumbled mix. Return to the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Cool pan on rack. Before cutting, cool in the refrigerator until the chocolate is firm. Slice and enjoy.

on 3/10/2009 I made these for a reception last Sunday and they flew off the plate so fast that I didn't get to sample one myself! I actually doubled the recipe, hoping to make two batches. But the pan size stated above was too big...or at least it would have made these a lot thinner than I wanted. So I just put the doubled ingredients in one pan. It worked fine but next time I'll have to sample some before I set them out on the table for others!
