Grandma's apple pie. So many memories. Have you ever tried to make an apple pie just like Grandma's? Does it never seem just right? This apple pie turns out just right, especially with some vanilla ice cream a la mode. And just MAYBE you can impress Grandma with your pie.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts (2 pack)
  • 8 Granny Smith Apples
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 3 tablespoons All purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pie Pan
  • Knife
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Bowl and Spoon
  1. Step 1

Turn on the over to 350F. This should be the first thing you do, so that your oven is preheated and will be ready when you pie is ready to be in the oven.

  2. Step 2

Peel, cut and core the apples. Your apples should be of uniform size and easily eaten. You do not want to make your pieces too big.

  3. Step 3

Make your sauce for the apples. Melt the butter in a sauce pan and add the flour. Once it is mixed, add both sugars and water. Heat to boiling, then reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Roll out the crust while you sauce is simmering. Press into a pie pan. Make sure that there are not any bubbles in the crust. Roll out the second crust (this will be your top crust).

  5. Step 5

With your apples still in the bowl pour the sauce over the apple and stir well. Make sure all the apples are coated and pour the apples and sauce into the crust in the pan.

  6. Step 6

Make vent holes in the top crust and lay over the bottom crust. Make sure that you pinch the edges to prevent the sauce leaking out of the edge of the pie.

  7. Step 7

Bake for 50 minutes in the oven. To test the pie and make sure that it is done, insert a knife in the center of the pie. If the knife goes in smoothly with little to no resistance, then your pie is done. If you meet resistance, increase bake time in 2-3 minute intervals until knife enters smoothly.

  8. Step 8

    Serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to put a cookie sheet under the pie pan to catch drips and keep your oven clean.
  • Suggest to your guest that they have it with some ice cream (adds a creamy quality to the taste).
  • Filling will be hot directly from the oven. Allow to cool prior to serving. Cooling will also allow the filling to set and make it easier to cut the pie.

on 12/14/2008 If you like a translucent filling, use cold water and corn startch instead of flour. A little lemon juice keeps the apples from turning brown. You sound like a pretty good cook!

on 9/17/2008 Sounds tasty. Sure beats the store bought kind, if you have the time/skills/ingrediants.
