Using only shading, rather than lines, to draw will yield a beautiful, professional-looking drawing. It takes patience and care, but the result will be well worth the effort.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good quality drawing paper
  • Pencils: #B, #2, #4, #6
  • Pencil sharpener
  1. Step 1

After deciding what you want to draw, sharpen your pencils. It is important to keep your pencils sharp.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you want to begin your drawing. Be sure your subject matter will fit on the paper, and that the composition is what you want.

  3. Step 3

Beginning with the "B" pencil, begin to shade using very light strokes placed closely together. If you put pressure on the pencil, you will permanently damage the paper's surface. Leave highlighted areas free of pencil strokes. DO NOT USE AN ERASER! Using erasers will damage the surface of the paper.

  4. Step 4

After the area is covered with the "B" pencil, repeat with the #2 pencil, refraining from covering areas of the "B" pencil which will be light on finished drawing. Do not put pressure on the pencil. What you will be doing is layering -- placing darker and darker pencil strokes on the drawing.

  5. Step 5

Repeat using the #4 and #6 pencils. These pencils will cover the areas which will the most darkly shaded in the drawing. Again, do not put undo pressure on the pencils. Allow the layering to build up dark areas.

  6. Step 6

When you finish, you should have a very well-shaded drawing. Good luck!
