Mashed potatoes are a delicious part of most family's meals. Most mashed potatoes get their distinct, comforting flavor from milk and butter--two "no-nos" when you can't consume dairy. It's not hard to make dairy-free mashed potatoes, but it is easy to make mashed potatoes that don't taste good. Dairy substitutes vary in quality and flavor, and you don't want to pick the wrong substitutes and end up with mashed potatoes your family rejects. Learn how to make dairy-free mashed potatoes in this article.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • potatoes, peeled and washed
  • water for boiling
  • stockpot
  • Earth's Balance non-dairy "butter"
  • Westsoy soymilk
  • hand mixer
  • salt
  1. Step 1

    Fill the stockpot with water for boiling.

  2. Step 2

    Turn the water on for the boil.

  3. Step 3

    Cut the potatoes into small, walnut-sized pieces and add to the water.

  4. Step 4

    Boil the potatoes until you can easily cut through them with a knife.

  5. Step 5

    Drain water.

  6. Step 6

    Add 1 tbsp. of Earth's Balance non-dairy "butter" for every cup or so of potatoes.

  7. Step 7

    Add 2 tbsp. of Westsoy soymilk for every cup of potatoes.

  8. Step 8

    Whip the potatoes with the hand mixer until they are the consistency you want. You may need to add more soymilk to make moist mashed potatoes.

  9. Step 9

    Add salt to taste.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid rice milk as a dairy substitute.
  • Don't overwhip the potatoes, or they will become very starchy.
