Overcome Binge Eating

Many people today suffer from binge eating. Learn tips on how to slowly, yet effectively overcome binge eating with this article!

Things You'll Need:

  • self-control
  1. Step 1

Many people today suffer from binge eating; it's a way to feel temporary relief or break free from the daily stress, as well as other issues that subconsciously bother them. However, binge eating is very harmful to our health, and can result in quick fat gain, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol if not controlled quickly.

  2. Step 2

First, admit that you have a eating problem. Say it out loud while looking at yourself in a mirror. Are you eating excess amounts of food just for relief? Do you keep eating and eating until your stomach pains, yet ignore that pain? These are obvious cases of binge eating. It is hard for people to admit they have the problem, but it's the most vital first step.

  3. Step 3

Next, figure out what the underlying cause for the binge eating is. Could it be due to boredom, stress, relationship problems, etc.? Once you figure out what it is, you have to find a way to free yourself from those issues; find a solution to whatever bothers you in life. This is key and is most likely the reason for your binge eating in the first place! I suggest meditation every single day for 30 minutes; it's a great way to clear the mind of problems.

  4. Step 4

Learn to see food as something that we eat to survive. One should never see food as a total comfort. Remember that we eat to live; not live to eat. This is a vital concept to engrave into your thinking. Really think this through and try to see food as a means to survival; see it as a blessing.

  5. Step 5

If you're still hungry late at night or throughout the day, it's okay to have something you crave, but have only one portion. Again, remember that we eat to live; not the other way around. Your body will tell you when it needs food. Don't resort to your emotions as an excuse for eating. Also remember to eat food slowly (chew on it thoroughly and don't just swallow it). Drinking plenty of water is also crucial.

  6. Step 6

Brushing your teeth beforehand also helps enormously. Brushing will leave your mouth feeling clean and refreshed; you don't want to dirty up that mouth after cleaning it, now do you?

Tips & Warnings
  • Find some kind of enjoyable activity to keep yourself occupied if you get an urge to start binging.
  • Before you decide to binge eat, realize how you'll feel afterwards, and put a stop to it right there and then!
  • Drink 3-4 glasses of water if you get an urge.
  • Don't buy any junk food next time you go shopping. Also stay away from any kind of fast food.
  • Stay away from low-calorie crash diets; starvation is another cause for binge eating. If you're not eating a normal amount of food, binge eating is inevitable.
