White gravy often accompanies meats at dinner or biscuits at breakfast.

Home-cooked breakfasts in the South often include white gravy, which is served over fluffy biscuits. The creamy staple often contains smoked sausage. The gravy requires only a few simple ingredients common to most pantries. Serve the gravy, also referred to as milk gravy, over country-fried steak and mashed potatoes for dinner as well.

    Things You'll Need

    • Large saucepan
    • 4 tbsp. flour
    • 4 tbsp. butter
    • 2 1/2 to 3 cups milk
    • 1/2 tsp. salt
    • 1/4 tsp. pepper
    • Biscuits, optional
    • Fried steak or sausage
      • 1

        Heat large saucepan to low heat.

        Add the butter to the saucepan and melt on low heat. Add the flour, salt and pepper. Stir until smooth.

        Add the milk gradually until all the ingredients are stirred. Continue to heat to boiling, stirring constantly to keep the gravy from becoming clumpy and sticking to the pan. After the gravy thickens, it is ready.

        Serve over hot biscuits, fried steak or any other food of your choosing.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Add cooked sausage to your white gravy to create a sausage gravy. Substitute bacon if you prefer.

    • Always stir or you will create a burned taste to your gravy.
