Things You'll Need:
- Large plastic barrel with screw on lid or
- Large plastic tub
- Duct tape
- Drill with 1/4 inch bit
-
Step 1
Purchase a large plastic barrel that has a screw on lid. These can be purchased at salvage outlets and military surplus stores. If you cannot find a barrel, purchase the largest plastic storage tub you can find at any superstore or home improvement store.
-
Step 2
Drill holes in the bottom and sides of the barrel at least one inch apart. Drill holes in the top as well. Do the same with the plastic tub if that is what you are using.
-
Step 3
Start the compost by putting several inches of green plant matter in the bottom of the barrel or tub. Continue filling the compost bin until you reach within one inch from the top of the container.
-
Step 4
Put the lid on the barrel. For extra security, secure the lid ring with duct tape. Do the same with the tub, using extra tape to make sure the lid will not accidentally come off the bin.
-
Step 5
Set in the corner of your garage. Turn the barrel or tub upside down every month for six months. Turn every six weeks until you are ready to use your compost in your garden.
