You can file for unemployment benefits in Michigan by computer.

If you are laid off or fired and live in Michigan, you may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits from the state. You can apply online or by telephone and begin receiving unemployment checks as soon as one week after you file your claim.

Instructions

      Gather the following information: your Social Security number; your driver's license or state identification number; your employment history for the past 18 months; and your bank's routing number and your account number if you select direct deposit for your benefit payments.

      Go to the state of Michigan's "File an Unemployment Claim Online" webpage (see Resources).

      Read the information and determine if you are eligible to file online. Click "To Begin to File a Claim."

      Read the information and choose "I agree" or "I disagree" and click "File a Claim."

      Supply the required personal information and click "Proceed."

    • 6

      Answer the qualification questions and click "Proceed."

    • 7

      Print any numbers or information you might need for future reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call 866-500-0017 with any questions regarding your claim.

  • Wait at least two weeks before contacting anyone if you do not receive your unemployment check.

  • The first week you are eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week.
