How to File for Unemployment in New Mexico
If you live in the state of New Mexico and have recently become unemployed, there are only two ways to file for unemployment benefits: by telephone and online. If you are uncertain of whether or not you are eligible for unemployment benefits, contact the state unemployment office and find out the facts. In many cases, if you were fired or laid off, you may eligible to receive benefits.
Things You'll Need
- Social Security number
- Mailing address and phone number(s) of employer(s) you worked for in last 18 months
- Start and end dates of last job (or jobs if more than one employer in last 18 months)
- Alien registration number and expiration date (for non-citizen residents only)
- Gross income (for that year until termination of employment)
- Pencil and paper to write down questions and instructions

Go online to New Mexico Workforce Solutions home page and click on “How to Apply for UI Benefits."

You will be given a choice whether to file online or by telephone. If you decide to apply by telephone, dial 505-841-4000 and tell the representative you are applying for a new claim.

Register online by clicking on “Claimant Login.”

Enter your Social Security number and create a four-digit personal identification number (PIN). You will enter your mother’s maiden name to verify your identity. After you have registered, click “Continue” in order to file your claim.

Fill in all the information requested and you will then be given a confirmation page. Print this page and keep it for future reference.

Print any necessary numbers or information you will need in the future regarding your claim.
You can call 505-841-4000 with any questions regarding your claim.
Wait at least two weeks before contacting anyone if you do not receive your unemployment check--sometimes it takes that long to process.
The first week that you are eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week.
