How to Design Block Crochet Patterns

You have seen the beautiful designs on table runners that have been crocheted. This article will tell you how to design your own pattern to crochet in block form. You will learn how to transfer a simple pattern to the grid paper used to design block patterns. Things You'll Need

• Grid paper
• Computer
• Scanner
• Pencil for shading your pattern
• Printer
• Print program

Instructions

1. Gather the materials needed and place them within reach when sitting down. Place the grid paper in the printer paper holder. Power up your computer.

2. Scan the image you want for your design on your scanner and save it to your computer. Make sure you name is something like "Pattern for Flower" or something that will accurately describe the pattern.

3. Open your print program. Find the scanned pattern and click on print so you can print the pattern on the grid paper. When you have finished printing the pattern, use your pencil to shade the pattern where you want solid squares. These blocks will serve as your solid leaves, eyes and letters for your project. Leave blank squares where you want a void in the pattern. Blocks where the pattern should be white should be left blank.

4. Count the rows and columns then figure out the number of stitches you will need to complete the pattern and begin your project.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are artistic, you may also want to hand draw your pattern and complete the shading in that manner.

• Make sure you begin with a simple pattern and work your way up to the more complicated ones.

• Try to keep your rows and columns equal in size.

• Do not use half squares. Only use full filled or voided squares in your pattern.
