Decide which game you are going to play. For online multiple-player RPGs, you can choose from many options, including Knights Online and World of Warcraft. Computer-gaming RPGs include Morrowind and Oblivion. Each game will have its own interface and special skills available for character creation.

Determine which weapons you want to use. You need different skills to handle different weapons. Strength is necessary for blunt instruments like axes and clubs, agility for long and short swords, and strength and eyesight for bows and arrows. How you want to work within a melee also determines the weapon to choose. If you want to stay far away from the enemies, go with the bow and arrow. Choose a short sword for close contact with the enemy.

Decide how heavy an emphasis to place on magic abilities. With many RPG games, one of your defense/attack methods will be stronger than another. You are usually a great magician or a great fighter. Decide if you want to place a heavier emphasis on magic abilities or weapon and shield abilities for your character. When picking magic skills, you may need to choose destruction skills for spells that help you kill things or alteration skills to be more adept at spells that change your appearance or alter locks.

Choose the level of your skills. Whenever you are creating a new virtual RPG character, you will be asked to choose certain skill sets. You won’t be able to max out every skill; for every one skill you are strong in, there may be another that has to be weaker. If you have already determined which weapons you want to use and what magic abilities you want, you will be able to choose the skills that complement those choices.

Choose your gender. There will be benefits and drawbacks to each gender, so decide which benefits help the skills you’ve chosen, and which would make your character too useless.

Identify your character’s race or species. Some games have many different races or species to choose from. Each will have different skills that can assist your playing.
