A business name establishes a company as a registered entity in the business sector. Researching a business name does not have to be a frustrating experience if you are able to narrow down the search in terms of the business type, area and location. Before beginning the process of researching a business, make sure you have some background information on where the business was started and the particular services it offers.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Business Directory
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Search in a business directory. Be very descriptive in your search, looking for active and inactive businesses. Examples of business directories are Hoover’s Handbook and Standard and Poor’s Register of Corporations, Directors and Executives

  2. Step 2

Search your local county clerk's office for DBA (doing business as) filings. These also contains information on business names. Utilize the resources provided to search by business name and type to narrow down your search.

  3. Step 3

Contact your secretary of state for information on the location of the incorporation office for businesses incorporated in your state or the partnership office for limited partnerships filed in your state.

  4. Step 4

Contact your state’s trademark clerk office, and request information on a particular business name.

  5. Step 5

Research the United States Patent and Trademark Office's online trademark database for a particular business name.

  6. Step 6

Perform a search on The Better Business Bureau website to find out if the business name has any complaints filed against it.
