A gas trimmer can be a useful tool when working outdoors. There is no better tool that can be used to cut the weeds close to buildings, trees, or your home. Proper maintenance is required to ensure the long life of your gas trimmer. With a few simple steps you can learn how to tune up a gas trimmer, an activity that should be done at least once a year.

From Quick Guide: Grass Trimmer 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gas trimmer
  • Lubricating grease
  • Motor oil
  • Gasoline
  • Old toothbrush
  • Old rags
  • File
  • Gasoline storage container
  • Gas trimmer air filter
  • Gas trimmer replacement string
  • Gas trimmer blade
  1. Step 1

Mix the correct amount of fuel and gasoline for your gas trimmer. If your trimmer does not receive the proper amount of lubrication, it can seize up and stop working. Place the fuel in a labeled container so that it is always ready when needed. The correct mixture can be found in your gas trimmer's operating manual.

  2. Step 2

Replace the air filter within the gas trimmer at least once every year. This should be done more often if needed, but at least once a year as a minimum. Although some air filters state that they can be cleaned and reused, for the best results just buy a fresh one.

  3. Step 3

Clean the flaps that are in charge of cooling the trimmer's engine down at least once every 2 weeks. This should be done every time you use the gas trimmer. If that is not possible then try to clean them at regular intervals. Use a toothbrush and some soapy water to complete this task. The toothbrush will be small enough to reach even the toughest spots.

  4. Step 4

Buy the right type of trimmer string, and replace it as needed. When it is time to replace your trimmer string, make a note of the model and brand of your trimmer. At the store match up the model number to the numbers on the packages and be sure that you buy the right kind. If the wrong kind of string is used, it could destroy your gas trimmer.

  5. Step 5

Sharpen your blade on a regular basis. If you notice that the blade has become dinged or bent, you will need to replace it with a new one from the store. A file can be used to sharpen the blade as needed, but it should be checked every few weeks if possible.

  6. Step 6

Lubricate the shaft of your gas trimmer with grease once a year provided that your trimmer model has one. This shaft will run from the bottom of the trimmer to the engine and will need a quick once over with grease to keep it lubricated.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lubricate the shaft and other fittings of your gas trimmer every few months if needed.
  • Make sure to shut off your trimmer completely before beginning any maintenance work.
