Decide when you will visit. San Diego area temperatures range from the upper 50’s in the winter to the upper 70’s in the summer. While San Diego is beautiful at any time of the year, if you are planning a beach vacation, you will want to visit in the summer when temperatures are higher.

Select a hotel. If you are planning on spending most of your time in the city, a downtown hotel would be the most convenient option. If you’ll be spending much of your time at the beach, investigate hotels at one of the many beach communities.

Visit Balboa Park in downtown San Diego. This area is home to the San Diego Zoo, the Globe Theatre, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Railroad Museum, the San Diego Air and Space Museum and many other museums. Don’t forget to visit one of the area’s many gardens, some of which offer specific themes.

Immerse yourself in history in Old Town, the place where San Diego began. The Junipero Serra Museum gives visitors a taste of what life was like in San Diego hundreds of years ago. The Mission San Diego de Alcala, founded in 1769, was the first church in California and still serves parishioners today. Visitors to the Mission can tour the original chapel.

Go to the beach. With miles of beaches to choose from, you are sure to find one that is perfect for you. Coronado Beach, on Coronado Island, is San Diego’s most well-known beach. The wide beach is perfect for families and is wheelchair friendly. If you spend the day at Coronado Beach, you may want to visit Hotel Del Coronado, a Victorian hotel known for its architecture and romantic setting.

Play golf at one of San Diego’s many golf courses. Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla is the area’s most famous golf course. Home to numerous PGA tour events, Torrey Pines offers a challenging course amid dramatic mountain and ocean views.

Tips & Warnings
Beach parking often fills up quickly in the summer. If you are driving to the beach, try to get there early.
Don’t expect to just drive up to Torrey Pines Golf Course and get a tee time the same day. Tee time reservations must be made 8 to 80 days in advance.
