Step 1
Find the best location to catch the wind. You need a place with wind speeds at about 17 mph. Anything less could compromise the success of your wind farm.
-
Step 2
Research and make sure the area you pick has access to the power grid. Call your local power company to check on this. You'll need to transmit into the grid so the wind's electricity can reach its customers.
-
Step 3
Contact the landowners if you need to set up on land that is not your own. You will need to come up with a financial arrangement with them so you can build your farm, along with the preliminary work needed before construction. Check in your local area for a mediator if you need one.
-
Step 4
Erect meteorological test towers within the boundaries of where you want to build, making sure to cover the whole area. These towers will gather data pertinent to the success of your farm. This step may take 6 months to 2 years to complete.
-
Step 5
Verify all data collected. If all measurements are within the limits, you are ready to start building.
-
Step 1
Manufacture turbines in a few ways. Or you may want to just purchase what you need premade. Depending on your resources, you may want to build your own. 2,000 W and up is too big to build on your own, but you should be able to handle 700 to 1,000 W.
-
Step 2
Double the rotor size to increase the wind harvest by a factor of 4. The higher the tower, the better the performance. The formula for figuring the wattage of wind power is: 1/2 x rho x A x V^3 Rho = 1.23 (air density); A = area in square meters; V = velocity. This will aid you on determining the size of the rotor you will need for your blade. The best you'll be able to get is 59 percent power from the total you get using this formula.
-
Step 3
Expect generation of power to be 80 percent in low winds and maybe 50 percent in higher winds. Erect your turbine 30 feet above anything within 300 feet to achieve this amount of power.
-
Step 1
Produce a small carbon footprint. Erecting lattice or pipe/tubing towers will do this. Either of these are erected using a crane or Jin-pole.
-
Step 2
Erect the pipe method by putting together two full lengths of schedule 40 steel pipe. Include a 2-inch gusset at the top. Use a Jin-pole and guy wires to raise it.
-
Step 3
Make a good solid foundation for the tower to set in.
