How to Set the Margins on a Microsoft Word Document

With each Microsoft Word document you create, the margins may need to be a little different. Depending on what kind of document you are making, changing the margins can be helpful. This is an easy skill to learn, and it will only take a few minutes to make your entire Microsoft Word document look more polished and professional. Follow the outlined steps to learn how to set the margins on a Microsoft Word document.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your computer on and open the Microsoft Word program.

    • 2

Select "File" from the menu bar at the top of the page.

    • 3

Choose the "New" option from the "File" sub-menu and choose "New Document" from the pop-up box that appears. This will open a new document. You can always set margins later, but it is best to set them before beginning to work on the document, rather than risk messing up the format at a later time.

    • 4

Click the "File" selection from the menu bar at the top of the page again.

    • 5

Scroll down and select the option that says "Page Setup" from the file sub-menu. This will cause a Page Set-Up options window to open on your screen.

    • 6

View the "Margins" tab within the Page Set-Up window.

    • 7

Set the margin widths for the top, bottom, left, right, gutter, header, and footer options by scrolling up or down to the desired width in the boxes next to the headings. You can choose to go as high as 22 centimeters or as low as -22 centimeters.

    • 8

Select whether you want the margin changes to affect the whole document or just from the point of the change forward. If you are changing margins after a Word document has been started and you want the first part of the document to keep the original margins, then you would choose the "From this point forward" option and click "OK".

    • 9

View the changes to your margins in your selected Microsoft Word document and determine whether you need to make any changes.

    • 10

Click on the "Edit" option from the menu bar at the top of the page and then "Undo page setup" if you need to undo the margins that you just set. Visit the Resources below for more information on how to perform other Microsoft Word functions.
