There are several reasons why an exterior storm door is a good idea. One, of course, is reducing utility costs. Another is that they add value to the home in an aesthetic way. Since an exterior storm door can add to the beauty of a home, be certain to choose one that fits your particular need. It is best that the storm door latch be on the same side as the entry doorknob. There is, however, one caution when considering a storm door; do not install a glass storm door if the sun is going to shine through it more than a couple of hours a day. The heat that builds between the glass storm door and the entry door can damage the entry door.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Storm door kit
  • Hack saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter’s level
  • Screw gun
  1. Step 1

Measure the height of the door jamb. Then, mark this measurement on the hinged side of the exterior storm door, and cut the excess off with the hacksaw.

  2. Step 2

Set the door in place against the door jamb, and secure it with one screw at the top of the hinged side of the storm door. Be careful to hold the door so it doesn’t swing open while you are securing the first screw.

  3. Step 3

With this in place, set the carpenter’s level against the frame to be certain it is plumb. Install the rest of the screws on the hinge side of the door.

  4. Step 4

Measure the width of the top of the door jamb, and cut the top of the frame to fit. Install the top part of the storm-door frame (the drip cap) so that it allows for an even space between it and the storm door all the way across.

  5. Step 5

Measure and cut the latch side of the door frame. Install the latch side of the door frame with the screws provided. Be certain to allow the correct distance between it and the door so the latch catches snuggly. Shims may be needed for security of the frame.Install the latch according to manufacturer’s instruction.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses.
  • Caulk may be required to achieve maximum insulation.
  • Be cautious when cutting the metal frame as the metal can cause injury.
  • Do not install a glass storm door if the sun is going to shine through it more than a couple of hours a day.
