Step 1
Decide how you want the world to see you. Do you want people to know your sexual orientation immediately? Or would you rather just make it clear to your family and friends? Will you be out at school or work?
-
Step 2
Tell the people most important to you. Start with those who will be most supportive and move on to the people it will be more difficult to tell.
-
Step 3
Practice what you're going to say to co-workers, acquaintances and strangers when they ask you about your love life. Will you use gender neutral terms like "date" or will you talk about "Bill" or "Maria"?
-
Step 4
Make any desired physical or wardrobe changes you were too nervous to make before coming out.
-
Step 5
Seek out some friends who are going through what you are going through. You can look for coming-out support groups or groups based around your particular sexual orientation or your interests or online communities.
-
Step 6
Remember the reason you wanted to become gay--you wanted the freedom to be your true self. Don't join the gay tennis association if you've never liked tennis before. On the other hand, maybe now is the time to stop spending every Friday night at the straight bar helping your friends pick up girls.
