With the continued popularity of skateboarding, many communities are creating skate parks. These places are built especially for skateboarders, usually of all ages, so you no longer have to jump makeshift ramps or skateboard down an alley because you are not allowed anywhere else. To skateboard in a skate park, however, you should remember the park is for everyone. Follow some simple tips that will make skating there safe and fun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skateboard
  • Helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  1. Step 1

Follow the rules. Most skate parks will have a list of rules posted near the entrance that tells you what you can or cannot do. Read them and follow them.

  2. Step 2

Wear protective gear. You may think helmets, knee and elbow pads may look dorky, but they also can save you from injury.

  3. Step 3

Be polite. The park is for everyone who follows the rules, not just you. Wait your turn if there is a line-up at a ramp or particular prop. Don’t ram into people on purpose and keep an eye out for smaller, younger kids that may end up inadvertently in your way. Treat other skaters as you’d want to be treated.

  4. Step 4

Know your limits. Just because the skate park has the steepest ramp you’ve ever seen, don’t go jumping off it unless you know you can handle it. Skate parks are often designed to offer some challenges and you may not be up to all of them. Don’t try a new thing without making sure you can handle it.

  5. Step 5

Ask if you don’t know something. Yes, it may be tough to admit you don’t know everything, but you just may make a friend as you learn how to use the prop.

  6. Step 6

Keep an eye on your stuff. Skate parks can have lots of people milling about, skating and coming in and out. Leaving things lying around is akin to begging someone to steal them. Only bring things you need to use at the skate park to the skate park.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some skate parks may have certain hours for younger kids. Find out if there is a schedule so you don’t show up at the wrong time.
  • Most skate parks do not allow bicycles because the props are not made to handle them. Don’t sneak bikes in. All you’ll do is wreck the place and make it unsafe and even unusable for other skateboarders.
