How to Rent a House in Hawaii

  1. Step 1

Choose the island you want to rent a house on in Hawaii. There are many islands to choose from, and they all have beautiful houses that you can rent. You can go to Vacation Rentals By Owner and click on an interactive map that will help guide you through the available houses in your particular area or island (e.g., Oahu, Molokai, Maui or Hawaii). Your choice may be dictated by having family and friends in the area, for instance, or by certain amenities you want to use, such as the surf or hiking trails.

  2. Step 2

Find a list of houses for rent on the island you chose. You can do this be either searching the internet or calling a travel agent who will prepare a list for you; travel agencies that specialize in Hawaii include Travel to Paradise. Craiglist is a valuable resource for Hawaii house rentals as well.

  3. Step 3

Make a list of the amenities you want in the house you rent. For instance, if you have small children, you won't want a home with high terraces or dangerous stairs. Will you bring pets? Do you wish to smoke indoors? These are the sorts of issues you need to work out before you pick rentals.

  4. Step 4

Compare the list you made with the list of houses for rent to narrow it down. Keep in mind the season. You often have more selection in the off season. In-season rentals go fast and are more expensive.

  5. Step 5

Choose more that one home you would like to rent and begin contacting the rental companies from Travel to Pparadise, Vacation Rentals By Owner or agencies you find online to see if they are available when you are planning to travel. Many rental companies can be contacted through email or you can call them.

  6. Step 6

Sign a rental contract with the house that you choose to rent in Hawaii. These contracts can often be mailed or emailed to you.

  7. Step 7

Send the rental contract back in the mail with a down payment for the cost of the house rental in Hawaii.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never send cash or an untraceable money order for a rental.
  • Make sure you read the rental contract before signing it and keep a copy for your records.
  • If you choose to use a travel agent, you may get a list of homes that is limited to the companies with which the agency collaborates.
