The good news is with the right eye and knowledge, you can choose faux pearls that look 100 percent authentic. 1. Look at the pearls in the store for trendy elements such as ribbons or unusual colors, like purple. These should be eliminated first as they are the furthest away from an authentic look. Steer clear of double strands. For earrings, shy away from pairs with diamond or gold adornment as part of the design.

2. Next, take time to look at the white or cream color. Usually, these are the most natural looking. You should also check for sheen, shine and gloss. Faux pearls made with glass offer the best in this department.

3. Take notice of the size and shape of each pearl. Make each ball or oval is the same size and, most importantly, they are the correct size for a pearl. Small or medium pearls work best, but steer very clear of jumbo pearls, which are the most faux-looking. In this sense, the smaller the better.

4. Check for imperfections. These can literally vary from pair to pair because of wear and tear at the store. Be sure to look for any scratches that can cause the pearls to peel.

5. Pay close attention to the string holding the pearls together. Thick, white string is the most natural.

6. Finally, check the clasp of the necklace. While not as important as other aspects, a traditional clasp that allows you to slide the hook through an oval are the most authentic looking. Yet, do not let a regular hook-clasp keep you from purchasing a necklace that meets the other criteria.
